This is the day that sort of starts of the Christmas Season in Sweden and parts of Finland – not because we haven’t had decorations up or listened to Christmas songs before this, but this is such a huge day that really sets the tone that now – now! – it is just eleven nights to Christmas, and soon the days will be growing longer.
St Lucia used to be around the Midwinter Solstice back when everyone adhered to the Julian calendar, so this is actually the original Yule Day, which might explain why we still have so many pagan traditions on this superficially catholic day. We haven’t been Catholics for many centuries, and pagans for more than that, but still we bake lussekatter and celebrate chasing away evil spirits, by lighting so many candles and watching the solemn Lucia processions early in the morning – the earlier the better!
