Scouting in the Archipelago

Today we went and fetched home our eldest son from a scout camp.

I guess the proper English word would be boy scout camp, but since we don’t have boy or girl scout groups any longer, we simply use the word scout regarding all kids and grown ups who are part of the scout movement.

Our local scout group, St Simons, have had a summer camp here in Sorpo several times now, and the location is so lovely! You have to walk through meadows and pens and small country roads that are sometimes filled with cows walking by. Today we also got to meet several calves, and the cows mooed to each other from pen to pen.

The cows all belong to the farm that has a traditional Swedish-Finnish farmhouse – red with white trims. You can see red houses with white trims everywhere you  go in the countryside in Finland or Sweden. In the Swedish speaking parts of Finland the houses often have a red and yellow banner like in the picture above. Finland’s official flag is blue and white, but the Swedish speaking population also have a red-yellow version that you can see many places in the Archipelago.

My kids are definitely not used to meeting cows, so this was a great experience for them!

When I was little in the 70s you could still see cows in many places when you drove around in the countryside. These days it is only a few farms who still have cows here where we live, so it is always a treat to visit a farm and really get to meet these lovely creatures. And get to know where milk really does come from!

All the scouts had had a lovely time here in the woods. Not too much sleep because of the sea gulls, but lots of fun games and activities.

The Finnish Archipelago is one of the most beautiful places in the world in my opinion.

Not too shabby a place to be camping!
